Best Banner?

Probably the best banner seen in recent times was on display at the recent Chelsea-ManU fixture. It ran "United..the kids..the wife; In that order." Have you seen better? For myself, I would like to see "United..the kids..the husband. In that order." Just so the lasses maintain equilibrium.

2 4 5 1 or 2 4 4 2 ? That Is The Question.

That Alan Pardew is still in a quandry over which formation to play was evident from yesterday's match at the Orient where his team selections and formation were a carbon copy of the previous week's home game against MKDons. Only the result was different and Saints, arguably, came away with one point when they might easily have had all three.

Sky cameras showed Alan Pardew at the Madejski stadium last night. With notebook! Anyone know who he had his eye on? Could have been a Leicester player. Harry Redknap and various other managers were there too. Presumably, they weren't all looking at the same player.

Saints Away At Bristol Rovers.

Article Type: Opinion
Author: Robin Howard
Date: 25/10/2009

Saints, hoping to do well in the FA Cup, were handed a slightly tricky away tie to Bristol Rovers. Rovers won at St Mary's back in September with a stoppage time goal but since then Saints have embarked on a four league match winning run with two of these being away from home. Other Hampshire teams also have difficult away matches. Eastleigh have to travel to Barrow or Chester, and the winner of Salisbury and Farnborough will travel to Accrington Stanley. Only Aldershot, now managed by Jason Dodd, have come off lightly with a home draw against Bury.

Supporters Getting Their Pride Back.

Going along to St Mary's these days is a world away from what it was like last season. There is a feel good factor around the place and a pride in feeling that your team contains 'men' who are able to do a job. Mind you, for 45 minutes on Saturday it seemed like Saints might not be going to live up to their obvious strengths.

SAINTS OFF BOTTOM.

Article Type: Opinion

Date: 18/10/2009

Saints got their second consecutive 3-1 away win as they beat Oldham fairly comfortably with goals from Hammond (his first for the club), Lambert and Connolly (also his first). I recently estimated that, with a record going forward of winning at home and drawing away, Saints could make the play-offs. If they keep up the form shown in these last two matches, they could reach that goal with something to spare. Not only is the team playing well but the squad is looking strong and the stats are encouraging. With 20 goals for, Saints are the 5th highest scorers in the Division. League leaders Charlton have only scored 2 more. Saints have earned 18 points this season and without the 10 points penalty would be only 1 point off a play-off position. Next up are MK Dons who are in 3rd place - the result will provide another useful measure of how far the side are progressing. With fixtures then being away to Leyton Orient (a short trip for the travelling brigade) followed by home games against Brighton and Norwich, expect Saints to be making a significant impact on the table by the end of November.

First Away Win Since March.

Article Type: Opinion

Alan Pardew's newly moulded squad took a major step forward last night as they beat Southend 3-1. All the goals came in the first half with Neal Trotman and Adam Lallana (2) getting the goals. It may be premature to talk about promotion when Saints still have a large deficit to make up but, should they manage to sustain a record equivalent to winning all home games and drawing all away matches, they could amass a total of 73 points. Over the last 3 seasons, points achieved by the 6th place team have been 76, 76 and 75, thereby getting them in to the play-offs. Sport is a notoriously fickle media to predict and form, injuries and even luck play a major part. One plus for Saints is that they now have the financial muscle (Markus's muscle) to make one or two significant signings in January to help them really push on. Quoted odds against their being promoted are now down to 7-2. Next up are Oldham away and they should prove slightly tougher than Southend but not beyond Saints getting at least a point.
